High schools and middle schools around the country are beginning to use tablet and new technology to expand the resources for students to learn. Experts call these tablets “personal learning devices.” This has become a topic of discussion because some people believe that instead of helping students to learn, the device will distract students with the different applications and activities available of the technology. Introducing new technology into the curriculum has pros as well as cons. Also, some believe that tablets should replace traditional textbooks.
Because I do not have a tablet of my own, I am excited to get our new tablets. However, the intended purpose of them is to be able to carry personal documents, take notes, and generally use them in class. Personally, I like to physically write down notes taken in class; it helps me learn the information better than just reading along from printed notes. Taking notes keeps me alert and participating in class. Also physically taking notes in a notebook is especially helpful when studying and trying to organize information to understand things better when looking back through notes. I feel the tablets would make that process complicated and, to be honest, I do not like using a stylis and writing on the screens of technology. It just doesn’t feel right to me. Also, I don’t know if this is just me, but reading boring information off of a computer, phone, or even tablet screen makes fall asleep!
So many things could go wrong with a tablet. What if it gets stolen? What if you lose the stylis, break the screen, or somehow just lose all your files and your notes from all your classes are gone? I don’t know all the information about these tablets and insurance but it all seems too risky to me. Maybe it’s just that I am not a technology person. Although there are a lot of advantages to having these new devices, I would rather stick to my traditional learning techniques!
What do you think about getting these new devices? Would you rather use the tablets or textbooks?
